September the season for rookie contract extension talks across the NBA. The bulk of the free agency period has come and gone. Franchises have until the day before the regular season starts to agree to extensions with any former rookie-contract players headed towards restricted free agency next summer. As the season approaches, the rate of signings for incumbent players increases.
The Detroit Pistons made a big splash today, signing All-Defensive forward Ausar Thompson to a five-year, $155 million deal. Shams Charania of ESPN reported the news.
Though the situation is slightly different, as he was a second-round pick, guard Pelle Larsson agreed to a four-year, $60 million contract with the Miami Heat. Charania reported that deal as well.
On the other end of the spectrum, Detroit Pistons forward Jalen Duren, currently a restricted free agent because he didn’t agree to an extension last summer, remains unsigned.
Another player eligible for an extension is Portland Trail Blazers guard Scoot Henderson. So far there’s been no noise, not even a murmur, about the two sides considering an agreement.
