For the 49ers, a rash of injuries drew widespread attention, but a new report says a nearby electrical substation was not to blame.
While some speculated that electromagnetic fields from a power substation near Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara contributed to the injuries, general manager John Lynch dismissed the theory as “a big nothing burger.”
Lynch told the San Francisco Chronicle that the team hired an independent scientist with 45 years of experience to examine whether radiation from the substation could have affected players. The review found no connection.
Several key players were sidelined by injuries. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk suffered a season-ending knee injury seven games into the 2024 season and missed the entire 2025 season.
Star quarterback Brock Purdy dealt with turf toe and missed time while recovering from a torn ligament, and star tight end George Kittle sustained a torn Achilles tendon.
NBC Bay Area’s Kris Sanchez has the full report in the video above.
