California observes first Farmworkers Day after Cesar Chavez allegations

More than two decades ago, March 31 became a state holiday honoring the achievements of Cesar Chavez.

Tuesday, the holiday is shifting to celebrate the broader farmworker movement and the contributions of farmworkers to the labor movement.

The city of San Jose is working to remove Chavez’s name from city landmarks, including plazas and streets.

Other communities are also reconsidering murals and school names after two women accused Chavez of sexually assaulting and abusing them when they were teenagers.

Dolores Huerta, Chavez’s longtime partner in the labor movement and co-founder of what became the United Farm Workers, has also spoken publicly about the allegations.

NBC Bay Area’s Kris Sanchez has the full report in the video above.
