Big rig removed after crashing into backyard in Crockett

A driver of an 18-wheeler took a wrong turn Monday, creating a major headache for residents along a tight, winding road in Crockett.

The driver had just picked up 80,000 pounds of sugar from the C&H Sugar factory and was attempting to get onto the freeway but instead ended up on Johnson Street, where the truck went off the road.

In the process, the driver hit several cars, knocked out a fire hydrant and a fence, went down an embankment and nearly struck a home where Donna Moreno was inside, unaware of the danger.

“As I was coming upstairs, I had my arms full of coats and I heard an enormous noise — you don’t hear a noise like that,” Moreno said.

“As I hung up the jacket and looked out, there was this truck inches away from the bedroom I’m in.”

“God had me. What are the chances I wasn’t taken out today? At 62 years old? I’m not done yet. God has bigger plans for me.”

NBC Bay Area spoke with a man whose car was damaged. He said he had just finished paying it off about a week ago and now it needs repairs.

The trucking company said the driver was not injured.

The driver does not face any criminal charges, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A wrecking crew removed the rig from the embankment Monday night.
