Displaced Oakland tenants say leases were terminated after fire
In Oakland, some residents displaced by a massive fire say their landlord is now adding insult to injury. That fire gutted a downtown apartment building on Broadway this week, and now some say they’re being told their leases have been terminated. Those residents are now scrambling to find housing and legal help. Residents were allowed back in Tuesday for just a few moments to grab essentials. Many of them say they lost nearly everything. “I started to smell smoke. So, in my unit, there’s no and there’s no sprinkler system,” said Saron Hanson, a displaced resident. Hanson lives directly underneath the second-floor apartment where Monday’s fire started. By the time he realized what was happening, his bedroom was already engulfed in flames. He got out safely but lost everything. “I could cry right now because, I mean, just emotionally tied to this street, to the building. The store is not there anymore. Truthfully, it’s a lot for me being that this was my first real apartment of my own,” said Hanson. Hanson is the cousin of rapper Mistah Fab, whose store was also damaged in the fire. This is what is left of Hanson’s apartment. Now, he’s hoping a newly posted GoFundMe page can help him find another place to call home and start rebuilding. “Hoping that a blessing and a prayer just comes out of the sky really,” said Hanson. Another resident says their unit’s sprinklers never activated. Oakland Fire says 20 people — including a baby — had to be rescued. The city of Oakland has opened a 24-hour temporary shelter at the Willie Keyes Recreation Center and is providing outreach and relocation support. John Gulino is among those now staying at the shelter. “Just taking it one day at a time,” said Gulino. But now, residents say they’re facing another shock. They say they were notified via email that their leases have been immediately terminated. Some believe the move is illegal and are seeking legal help. The city is also weighing in, urging tenants not to sign any documents related to the fire without first consulting a lawyer. “I don’t agree with that. I’m not ready to sign anything until I talk with a lawyer,” said Gulino. The same apartment building was the scene of a much smaller fire in 2024. The building is owned by Ted Dang of Commonwealth Real Estate. He did not respond to our request for comment. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Timothy Busfield can be released while awaiting trial, judge rules
A judge has ordered that actor Timothy Busfield be released from jail during a detention hearing on child sex abuse charges. The order Tuesday by state district court Judge David Murphy is linked to accusations that Busfield inappropriately touched a minor while working as a director on the set of the series “The Cleaning Lady.” The judge ordered the defendant released on his own recognizance, pending trial. Busfield will be supervised upon release by a pretrial service in Albuquerque, and can leave the state to live at home, the judge said. Busfield, an Emmy Award-winning actor who is known for appearances in “The West Wing,” “Field of Dreams” and “Thirtysomething,” was ordered held without bond last week at his first court appearance. Busfield called the allegations lies in a video shared before he turned himself in. Celebrity News Jan 13 Actor Timothy Busfield turns himself in amid child sex abuse allegations Actors Jan 10 Actor Timothy Busfield accused of child sex abuse in New Mexico At the hearing Tuesday, Busfield was handcuffed and dressed in an orange jail uniform at the hearing in a New Mexico state district court, while wife and actor Melissa Gilbert watched from the court gallery. Gilbert was tearful while exiting the courtroom after the judge ordered Busfield’s release. Gilbert, who played Laura Ingalls in the 1970s to ’80s TV series “Little House on the Prairie,” is on the list of potential witnesses submitted ahead of the hearing. Albuquerque police issued a warrant for Busfield’s arrest earlier this month on two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and one count of child abuse. A criminal complaint alleges the acts occurred on the set of the series “The Cleaning Lady.” According to the criminal complaint, an investigator with the police department says a child reported Busfield touched him on private areas over his clothing on one occasion when he was 7 years old and another time when he was 8. The boy’s twin brother told authorities he was also touched by Busfield, but did not specify where. He said he didn’t say anything because he didn’t want to get in trouble. On Monday, Busfield’s attorneys submitted two brief audio recordings of initial police interviews in which the children say Busfield did not touch them in private areas. The attorneys in a court filing argue that the complaint characterizes the interviews as a failure to disclose abuse, but an “unequivocal denial is materially different from a mere absence of disclosure.” According to the criminal complaint, one of the boys disclosed during a therapy session that he was inappropriately touched by the show’s director. Those records were obtained by police during the investigation. Arguing Tuesday for Busfield’s continued detention, Assistant District Attorney Savannah Brandenburg-Koch called evidence of abuse against Busfield strong and specific. “The boys’ allegations are supported by medical findings and by their therapist,” Brandenburg-Koch said. “Their accounts were specific and not exaggerated.” She also described a documented pattern of sexual misconduct, abuse of authority and grooming behavior by Busfield over the past three decades. Prosecutors also say witnesses have expressed fear regarding retaliation and professional harm. “GPS is not going to tell this court if he is around children or talking to witnesses,” Brandenburg-Koch said. Busfield’s attorneys have argued that the allegations emerged only after the boys lost their role in the TV show, creating a financial and retaliatory motive. The filings detailed what the attorneys said was a history of fraud by both the boys’ father and mother. They cited an investigation by Warner Bros. into the allegations that found them unfounded. Busfield also submitted letters vouching for his character, and his attorneys say he passed an independent polygraph test. Legal experts say New Mexico is among a few states that allow polygraph evidence in…

Monterey underwater photographer trying to change the image of the strange Mola mola
For much of his life, Patrick Webster has slipped into a wetsuit, strapped on his elaborate camera system and dove into the world’s oceans from Antarctica to Monterey to capture images of underwater creatures. But of all the creatures that have appeared before his lens, nothing thrills Webster more than his encounters with the strange and mysterious Mola mola — or sunfish. “Ever since I started scuba diving, seeing a sunfish is always a dream and a highlight on every dive,” Webster said on Monterey’s San Carlos beach. Webster has captured hundreds of images and videos of Mola mola, one of the ocean’s most peculiar looking fish. It looks like a giant round head with a couple fins and no tail. “In fact, that’s its name in German is schwimmender kopf, which is swimming head,” Webster said. The sunfish is among the world’s largest bony fish, weighing as much as 2,500 pounds. Often when the non-diving public encounters one, it’s resting at the ocean surface flapping one of its fins in the air while catching some rays. Webster said because of those superficial observations, the fish have earned something of a lowly reputation. “Hating sunfish is an entire wing of the internet. It’s the dumbest fish. It doesn’t know how to swim. It doesn’t know how to protect itself. It’s this oceanic moron,’” Webster said, ticking off the common misconceptions. “Nothing could be further from the truth.” Patrick Webster captured this image of a Mola mola during a dive in Monterey Bay. Webster, who dives frequently in Monterey Bay, has devoted a chunk of his career to setting the record straight about sunfish. He shares his photos and videos and has become a self-appointed ambassador for the fish — earning him the nicknames Underwater Pat, Mola Guy and the Mola-garch. His campaign of public enlightenment swings into high gear in fall and winter when sunfish descend on Monterey Bay. “When you dive with a sunfish, it’s one of the most expressive fish,” Webster said. “They’re very curious. They come right over to you.” Unfortunately for the fish, those also excited to see them are sea lions, which will chew off their fins and leave their lifeless bodies drifting in the surf. It’s a heartbreaking sight for Webster, who has captured such scenes. Webster easily qualifies for Mola mola’s No. 1 super fan. As he dug through his car, he produced a Mola mola stuffed animal, a Mola mola beach towel, a Mola mola sculpture, a Mola mola eraser, a Mola mola shaped cutout covered in wine corks, and a sourdough bread he baked himself in the shape of a Mola mola, with poppy seeds for eyes. The back of his car is also covered in Mola mola stickers he designed in 2014 and are now the globally recognized official dive flag of Monterey Bay. “Mola mola is probably the greatest ocean ambassador for what the ocean life can be if it’s not flashy and has its own shark week to celebrate it,” Webster said. It was actually a sort of shark encounter that introduced Webster to the Mola mola. He was working at the Monterey Bay Aquarium at a time when the aquarium famously had a juvenile white shark on display. “Ninety-percent of the questions were, ’Cool shark. What the heck is that thing?’” Webster remembered. “And then the Mola would be swimming by. ‘Yeah, who’s charismatic now?’” Patrick Webster captured a selfie of himself with a rare Mola tecta, also known as the hoodwinker sunfish. Webster said this past year of dives has marked his most successful at spotting rare Mola mola in Monterey Bay. He recently encountered a massive Mola tecta — aka the hoodwinker sunfish on a dive near the Monterey Bay Aquarium — considered by some to be the holy grail of Mola mola. A selfie video Webster shot of the encounter shows him dwarfed by the giant fish as he yelled “Oh my God!” — audible through his scuba gear and above the din of bubbles. “Seven feet, maybe 500 pounds of pure oceanic wonder,” Webster said. “I’m going to be riding that high the…

3-time medalist David Wise wants one more shot at Winter Olympics
Freestyle skier David Wise of Reno, Nevada, a three-time Olympian and three-time medalist, still has some tricks up his sleeve. Wise, who trains in the Tahoe area, said he’s not stressed because his everyday preparation and experience outweigh the pressures of competition. “Nobody can win a halfpipe competition without doing at least one of the tricks that I invented back in the day,” Wise said. “That takes the pressure off.” NBC Bay Area’s Garvin Thomas has more in the video report above. 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics Jan 13 Who has qualified for Team USA? Warriors: Fin de saison pour Jimmy Butler
MLK Day maudit pour Jimmy Butler.
