Bayern Munich’s draw in the Champions League for the league phase appears to be advantageous, but not necessarily easy.
With the following slate, the Bavarians will be well-equipped to deal with the playoff round (assuming the Bavarians qualify, of course):
- Arsenal (H)
- Atlético Madrid (A)
- Real Betis (H)
- Manchester United (A)
- FK Bodø/Glimt (H)
- LOSC Lille (A)
- Slavia Praha (H)
- Viking (A)
So, which game is the best overall from this draw? Is the high stakes showdown with Arsenal? How about a prove-you-can-battle-through-a-slag-of-a-match-on-the-road against Atlético Madrid?
Those are certainly worthy, but we are going with Manchester United. This blockbuster matchup with Manchester United in the 2026/27 Champions League league phase will have emotions running high for Bayern Munich fans, who love to batter the Red Devils.
The matchup carries plenty of history, including the unforgettable 1999 Champions League final. More recently, the clubs met in the 2023/24 group stage, with Bayern Munich winning both encounters as Manchester United finished bottom of the group. That nail-in-the-coffin performance was a point of pride for Bayern Munich fans during that campaign.
This time, Manchester United returns to Europe’s premier competition after missing out in recent seasons, while Bayern Munich enters as one of the leading contenders for the trophy. The German champions will expect to challenge for a top-eight finish and automatic qualification for the Round of 16.
For Vincent Kompany and his squad, the trip to Old Trafford should provide one of the most anticipated nights of the league phase. Manchester United, meanwhile, will have the opportunity to measure themselves against one of Europe’s traditional powers.
Good luck!
It is a fixture packed with history, but the focus will now shift toward creating a new chapter. Bayern Munich will enter the matchup as favorites, but Manchester United will be eager to make their return to the Champions League memorable.
As a reminder, the top eight teams are awarded direct qualification and automatically advance to the round of 16 with a bye. From there, the top eight teams receive seeded status in the round of 16 draw.
For the middle 16 teams (9th to 24th) in the league phase, there is a playoff qualification round. These teams advance to a two-legged knockout phase playoff. As for seeding, teams ranked 9th to 16th are seeded and will play the unseeded teams ranked 17th to 24th (with the second leg hosted at home by the seeded team).
For the bottom 12 teams (25th to 36th), they are eliminated and knocked out of the competition.
