A mother and her 2-year-old daughter were killed after they were struck by lightning in Margate on Sunday, police said.
According to Margate Police, officers and fire rescue crews arrived in the area of 7941 NW 1st St. after receiving a call that two people were struck by lightning and were found lying on a sidewalk.
At the scene, officers and crews found the mother and her daughter and started performing CPR.
The child was taken to Broward General Hospital, and her mother was taken to North Broward Hospital.
Police said that they then died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The mother was identified as 40-year-old Kenya Glasgow.
Neighbors told NBC6 that it all started earlier in the afternoon when they saw and heard thunder and lightning.
They thought it was just a normal Florida rainstorm, but that’s when they said they heard a strike that made their homes shake.
When they looked outside, they saw two people on the ground right next to a car.
One man who spoke with NBC6 said he ran outside to help and said he saw burn marks and smoke coming from the woman and child’s bodies.
He said he immediately called 911 and told police that two people had been struck by lightning.
“I told one of the family members we need to slip her over to perform CPR, but she had two holes in her chest, and thank God the ambulance was coming down the street, and I said, ‘They’re here, they’re here,’ and I directed him to the baby, and they took the baby right away and a second ambulance came for the mother,” the man said.
An investigation into the incident remains active.
Preliminary information said the child was a boy, but it was later confirmed the minor victim was a girl.
