Community members, environmental advocates and local officials will gather Sunday afternoon for an interactive town hall to rally support for the Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Act, a statewide effort aimed at holding major oil companies financially responsible for climate damages.
The event is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m., Aug. 2, at the First Unitarian Church of San Jose, located at 160 N. Third St.
Organized as part of the “Polluters Pay Statewide Tour,” the high-energy rally is one of several taking place across California to educate the public on the proposed legislation and discuss strategies for its passage.
The town hall will feature an interactive panel, community building activities and opening remarks from state Assemblymember Ash Kalra. Environmental advocates with Food & Water Watch, along with health professionals, youth activists and local residents, will share personal stories detailing how climate change has impacted the San Jose area. Organizers say the event will feature a lively atmosphere with sign-waving and chanting.
Advocates say the Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Act is designed to ensure that big oil companies, rather than taxpayers, foot the bill for the environmental damage they have contributed to over the decades.
If passed, funds generated by the legislation would be invested directly back into neighborhoods to build community resilience, support essential workers responding to climate disasters, and finance a faster and fairer transition to clean energy.
