A raging fire swept through a multi-family home in Chelsea, Massachusetts, displacing residents Tuesday evening.
Fire crews responded to the blaze on Cottage Street, finding heavy fire on two floors of the building.
The fire spread to an adjacent building. No one was injured, with Chelsea Fire Chief John Quatieri saying everyone made it out safely.
Authorities initially said seven people were displaced, but La Colaborativa in Chelsea told Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra that at least 28 people were affected. The organization is providing them with shelter and aid.
Firefighters faced difficulties at the scene due to the narrow and steep street, and the fact that the buildings are very close together.
Among the damages reported from the fire, the rear staircase collapsed completely, and there are concerns about the roof of the structure. The building was declared a total loss. The adjacent building sustained some damage, but the extent of it was not specified.
Authorities said it appears the fire started on the second floor, and noted that the smoke detectors were working.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
