Elevated CTA trains won't operate in the Loop this weekend, agency says

As part of the CTA’s ongoing rehabilitation of a key junction at Wells and Lake, elevated rail service in the Loop will be paused over the weekend.

According to an alert from the CTA, elevated trains will not operate in the Loop on the Brown, Green, Orange and Pink lines this weekend, with that service interruption beginning at 4 a.m. Saturday and running through 4 a.m. Monday.

The CTA says the pause in elevated operations in the Loop will be undertaken to help complete track renewal work near a key junction point at Wells and Lake, where numerous CTA lines come together and funnel in different directions out of the downtown area.

Train service on the Brown Line will still operate between Kimball and the Merchandise Mart, with shuttle buses replacing that service between the Merchandise Mart and the Harold Washington Library, according to the agency.

Trains on the Orange Line will operate between Midway Airport and Roosevelt, with shuttle buses operating between Roosevelt and Clinton.

According to the CTA, trains on both the Green and Pink lines were already being impacted by ongoing work by the Chicago Department of Transportation to replace portions of the Lake Street bridge over the Chicago River.

Those changes will be even bigger over the weekend, as trains on the Green Line will operate between Harlem/Lake and Clinton. They will also operate between Roosevelt and the South Side terminus of the Green Line, but shuttle service will replace trains operating between Clinton and Roosevelt.

Finally, trains on the Pink Line will operate between 54th/Cermak and the Racine Blue Line stop, but will not operate into the Loop, with riders urged to seek alternative transportation.

More information on the changes can be found on the CTA’s website.
