Traffic on DuSable Lake Shore Drive was snarled early Thursday after a crash downtown, with police and fire trucks at the scene and heavy backups building for the morning commute.
The crash, in the northbound lanes on DuSable Lake Shore Drive at Balbo, was blocking three right lanes in the 5 a.m. hour. Total Traffic & Weather Network said. Delays stretched back as far as Soldier Field.
Photos and video from the scene at 5:30 a.m. showed the aftermath of the crash, which involved a black car and a pickup truck. The car could be seen smashed into the back of the pickup, with smoke billowing into the sky.
Firefighters and police were at the scene directing traffic in the busy area. Some drivers in the northbound lanes could be seen crossing the median onto the southbound side in an attempt to turn around.
“All these northbound lanes are blocked,” NBC 5 traffic reporter Kye Martin said. “Southbound coming into Balbo, you’re tight too, with hefty delays in both directions.”
Lanes reopened later Thursday morning but traffic remained.
