The Secret Service is preparing for President Donald Trump’s visit to a northwest suburb of Chicago sometime this weekend for the Presidents Cup golf tournament.
The event that expects to bring 30,000 people to Medinah Country Club, located at 6N001 Medinah Road in Medinah, is likely to cause traffic, said Derek Mayer, U.S. Secret Service special agent in charge of the Chicago Field Office.
“Obviously, when the president goes anywhere, that adds some security. So, the day the president’s going to be here, traffic will be tight,” Mayer said.
Mayer also said the impacts will be felt by people traveling by air.
“Whenever the president goes somewhere, there’s, you know, freezes, there’s ground freezes. But it’s going to be no different here than it would be anywhere else in the United States when the president goes somewhere,” he said.
The PGA Tour and DuPage authorities are taking security “very seriously” for the event, Mayer said.
“There will be a multi-layered approach to our security” that involves the PGA Tour, the county, and, in some cases, Secret Service.
Secret Service’s approach to security is “constantly evolving,” Mayer said, and is “taking extra security measures to ensure the President is safe wherever he goes.”
“We work closely with the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, with the PGA Tour, with the Illinois State Police and surrounding law enforcement to make sure the President is in a secure bubble at all times,” Mayer said.
Presidents Cup organizers says allow extra time for whatever day the President attends – which should be announced a day or two before.
