Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman has been released from a Cincinnati hospital, and is sharing pictures of himself after a frightening incident in Sunday’s game.
Bregman was standing in the on-deck circle near the Cubs’ dugout during Sunday’s game against the Reds when a foul ball off the bat of Michael Busch bounced off the turf and struck him directly in the face.
Bregman was immediately attended to by trainers, and was taken to a Cincinnati hospital for tests and treatment according to cubs manager Craig Counsell.
On Monday, Bregman revealed that he was back in Chicago a day after he was struck, and he shared a photo of his face on his Instagram story:
Counsell had told media the ball hit Bregman right below the left eye, causing a gash and significant swelling. That swelling is certainly still visible on his face, with his eye swollen shut and his jaw visibly swollen in the photo.
The Cubs have not provided an official update as to the nature of Bregman’s injuries, but the incident happened at a very unfortunate time, as the Cubs are just one week away from a possible playoff series.
Assuming the Cubs can win one more game or the Arizona Diamondbacks lose one more game, the Cubs will clinch a spot in the National League Wild Card Series, which would get underway a week from Tuesday.
It’s unclear whether Bregman would be able to play in that series, but the team will reveal more information about his status on Tuesday when they open a three-game series against the Miami Marlins at Wrigley Field.
