Checking in on Eric Adams—Peddling Data Centers, Dining with Republican Megadonors, and a Morning CitiBike of Shame

It has been nine months since Eric Adams ended his one-term tenure as New York City mayor, and almost a year since he announced he was ending his reelection campaign, after withdrawing his name from the democratic primary and running an unsuccessful campaign as an independent. So what in God’s name has he been up to since doing God-knows-what as NYC mayor? Well–deep breath–According to a conversation with The Real Deal in July, Adams has made something of a hustle of “selling rebar, facilities cleaning and more” for various real estate/tech companies. Sure! When asked for the exact name of the companies he was now employed by, he responded, “I got a brain blank on the name of the [company].” A leopard can’t change its spots! In August, he then materialized at a Wisconsin Rapids town hall, where he spoke on behalf of a company called PNK Group about building a data center in the town.

“If we like it or not, folks, data centers are gonna be here,” he told the crowd, and was reportedly “jeered and heckled throughout.” So, clearly, after a very successful year, it was time to party.

On Tuesday night, Adams celebrated his 66th birthday and carried on into Wednesday morning, resulting in a public “walk of shame”—or rather, a “CitiBike of shame,” according to photographs obtained by the New York Post.

In the photos, Adams was caught riding a CitiBike wearing the same outfit he wore the night before, or as the outlet put it, “wearing an exhausted look and the same rumpled shirt he wore to the bash.” Ouch. Adams responded to the outlet’s reporting in a tweet, writing, “Hold on a second. Don’t you all party all night on your birthday?”

He’s like a worse, more corrupt, more hungover Zohran Mamdani.

To make matters worse, Adams had his birthday dinner with Republican megadonor John Catsimatidis, once described as Mamdani’s “biggest hater,” who also threatened to cut jobs and move if Mamdani won the mayoral election, and then (shocker!) didn’t. I guess Catsimatidis and Adams made fast friends. The enemy of my enemy, after all.

Well, it would appear Eric had a great night for that 66th birthday. But regarding that pesky criminal investigation into his staff’s bribery/conspiracy habits… in June, his former chief of staff, Frank Carone, and three others were arrested for their roles in a bribery scheme, marking yet another scandal for the former mayor’s office. But not to worry—because if Adams has proven anything, it’s that there’s clearly quite a career to be had in “consulting” post-bribery scandal and reputational ruin.
