PHOTOS: Northern lights shine over Boston, New England in rare show

The northern lights could be seen across New England Tuesday night.

Space weather forecasters had said earlier that auroras could be triggered by severe solar storms.

Soon after nightfall, riots of color could be seen in the sky, especially to those using cellphones. (Long exposure times help capture the phenomenon, which is caused by energy from solar wind activating atoms in the upper atmosphere.

On Tuesday night, the aurora were typically bright green and red. Here are some photos of the colors in the sky over Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

The northern lights are typically only seen at very northern latitudes and rarely seen over Boston.
