Richard Sherman Fires Sharp Words at Raiders Over Pete Carroll Firing
On Jan. 5, the Las Vegas Raiders decided it was best to cut the Pete Carroll era after one season in which the team went 3-14. Nonetheless, that decision isn’t sitting well with former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman. Sherman outlined several reasons why the Raiders were better off keeping Carroll for at least another season, including cultural and financial motives. “I didn’t see it coming,” Sherman said in a Jan. 7 video from “The Richard Sherman Podcast.” “I didn’t think they would be that impatient. Sure, this was a rough year. Obviously, Chip Kelly wasn’t the guy they thought he was. His system doesn’t necessarily work in the National Football League. It works in college, and it works well in college. It does not work in the National Football League. “It’s odd that Pete would have hired him when he’s played him as an opponent, and we’ve had a lot of success against that system. I thought that would give him another chance, another year to continue to establish the culture, also knowing that they’re paying other coaches—your previous coaches—a lot of money.”Pete Carroll Joins a Long List of Fired CoachesMoreover, Sherman explained how much money the Silver and Black are paying coaches not to coach for them, which is why he didn’t understand the decision to fire Carroll after one season. “They’re paying Antonio Pierce, $8 million; Josh McDaniels, $10 million; Jon Gruden, $10 million; Pete Carroll, $16 million; and Chip Kelly, $6 6. Who signs up for that?“ Sherman added. “That’s why you don’t fire.“If nothing else, you don’t fire him because you don’t want to be paying another coach to not coach for your team. I think that’s the thing, the issue that I have with all of this is: what are you guys doing? How do you think anybody’s ever going to have success with this if you don’t give them more than a year?”Tom Brady Deserves Blame for Las Vegas’ SituationWith the Silver and Black now looking for another head coach in two years under minority owner Tom Brady and general manager John Spytek, NBC Sports NFL insider Mike Florio didn’t hold back on the former NFL QB. Despite being only a minority owner, Brady carries a lot of weight, and Florio believes he should be criticized for the disastrous 2025 season and the mess the Raiders find themselves in. “He was brought in to stabilize the organization,“ Florio said on the Jan. 5 edition of “PFT PM.“ “Owner Mark Davis said so himself. Brady got a slice of the team at a below-market rate, in part because Davis is buying Tom’s expertise. Remember, last year, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that this is Tom’s show now. That was a year ago.“If it was really a show, it would be cancelled. It was a mess. Brady somehow has avoided the blame for it. Not many. I know I’m one of them. We have to call it like we see it. This is partially Brady’s fault. He’s the one who’s pressing buttons, and he’s the one who’s choosing not to go all in. I’ve said for weeks now, Brady’s got to go all in or all out. You can’t do this job halfway. We’ll see how much time he spends on it going forward.” Like Heavy Sports's content? Be sure to follow us. Wizards Emerge as Top Trade Destination for Trae Young: Report
The Washington Wizards are one of the worst teams in the NBA. Right now, they sit as the second-worst team in the Eastern Conference. Only the oft-injured Indiana Pacers are worse than the Wizards right now. With that being the case, they haven’t had much to look forward to.Despite how poorly the team has played so far this season, they have been linked as a possible trade target for the Hawks as they look to trade Trae Young. Young is one of the superstars who has been made available ahead of the trade deadline this season. As the Hawks and Young try to work together to find a possible new home for him, Young has now revealed that the Wizards are the preferred trade destination for him. Cox/Getty Images) Wizards Emerge as Top Trade Destination for Trae YoungAccording to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Young has decided that the Wizards are the team at the top of his preferred destinations in a trade. Young has one year left on his contract, and it is a player-option worth $49 million. He could decide to become a free agent this offseason.Picking the Wizards is a strange choice for Young. Washington has assembled a roster that is full of young players. How Young would fit into that fold is unclear. The Wizards would likely send back a mixture of C.J. McCollum and picks back, which would allow Washington to keep their young core.Young is putting up the worst stats since his rookie season. His trade value is the lowest that it has ever been, which is why the Wizards’ price wouldn’t be as high as it would have been before the season. Young might just be choosing Washington for contract purposes. GettyAtlanta Hawks guard Trae Young gets fouled. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) The Wizards Might Trade for Trae YoungAdding Young to the lineup this season wouldn’t do much for the Wizards. They are too far back in the standings to make the playoffs. Adding Young would only be a signal that the Wizards are trying to sell more tickets for the end of the season, unless they sign him to a contract extension.Signing him to a big deal would give Washington its first star player since trading away Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns. Young would be part of the Wizards’ core moving forward, along with Bilal Coulibaly and Alex Sarr. He would be charged with helping those two players develop.Of course, the Hawks do not have to trade Young to the Wizards just because he wants to go there. They will wait to get the best possible deal before deciding to deal him. Washington will likely try to keep as many first-round picks as possible in any trade.Young will likely be one of the first players traded this season, as no players have been traded yet this season.
