Patriots Workout Former Jets WR Amid Injuries to Drake Maye’s Weapons

The New England Patriots are so desperate for healthy wide receivers that they’re dipping into their division rival New York Jets’ pool of players for some depth.

According to Patriots reporter Mike Reiss, New England hosted wide receivers Cole Burgess and Dymere Miller for a workout on Tuesday.

Miller signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers last offseason, after not being selected in the 2025 NFL Draft.

With Mack Hollins on injured reserve and Kayshon Boutte in concussion protocol, the Patriots are in dire need of healthy wide receivers ahead of their Wildcard Weekend matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Drake Maye is going to need to throw to somebody.

Dymere Miller’s Path to the NFL

The Coatesville, Pennsylvania native started his collegiate football career at Monmouth University, spending three seasons with the Hawks.

He redshirted his 2020 freshman season before hauling in 17 receiving touchdowns to go along with 2,380 yards on 165 catches over his next three years at Monmouth.

Miller then transferred to Rutgers, opting to stay in the state of New Jersey.

In his 2024 season with the Scarlet Knights, Miller acclimated well to the jump to Division I with a solid season, catching 59 passes for 757 yards and four touchdowns, leading all Rutgers receivers.

It was enough to put him on NFL teams’ radars, and he received a relatively positive review from NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein.

“Field-stretching slot receiver with instant acceleration and impressive separation speed. Pressing Miller can lead to problems for cornerbacks, but he doesn’t run good enough routes to beat off-man coverage as often as he should,” wrote Zierlein.

“His ball skills fall below average, whether he’s tracking the ball into his hands or finishing catches when contested. Miller is dangerous on jet sweeps and vertical routes, but his route-running and ball skills need plenty of work.”

Miller’s draft projection was exactly what he was, a priority free agent, and it was the New York Jets who decided to pick him up right after the draft.

Throughout the preseason, Miller returned two kicks for 33 yards and hauled in one reception for 24 yards.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to make the team, and the local kid was released on August 24.

Can Dymere Miller Stick Around in New England?

Miller was unable to carve out a role for himself with the New York Jets, but will he find a home with the New England Patriots?

Maybe. Since the workout, there has been no news of an official signing, but the Patriots will have to find somebody to fill their vacant spots in the wide receiver room.

Another undrafted free agent, Efton Chism, has been asked to step up and fill the void left behind by New England’s banged-up pass catchers.

He made an appearance in the final two games of the season for the Patriots, catching three passes for 75 yards and one touchdown.

Of course, his lone touchdown and first of his NFL career came against the New York Jets, and I’m sure Patriots fans wouldn’t have it any other way for their new wideout.

But they’re going to need more bodies than just Chism if they want to compete in the NFL playoffs, and maybe Miller can be a contributor in an otherwise thin room.
