The world of women’s golf has officially entered a bold and exciting new chapter. On January 6, the LPGA Tour and TMRW Sports jointly announced the formation of WTGL, a groundbreaking women’s indoor team golf league designed to expand the appeal of the women’s game and create a fresh platform for elite players and new fans alike.
This announcement marks a significant evolution in golf’s competitive landscape–one that blends high technology, fast-paced team competition, and innovative media presentation in a format built for the modern sports audience. The league is set to launch in the winter of the 2026-27 season at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, a purpose-built venue that has already become synonymous with TMRW’s tech-driven golf experiences.
Innovation Meets Tradition
From its inception, WTGL has a clear mandate: introduce a new competitive format that complements traditional global golf while amplifying fan engagement, personality, and entertainment. As golf continues to seek avenues to broaden its audience, this women’s league promises to showcase elite LPGA talent in a way that resonates with contemporary sports media consumption.
Unlike regular stroke-play tournaments that span four days, matches are structured as team-based competitions featuring short-form match play. These contests blend live performance with cutting-edge technology, where players hit into five-story-high simulator screens before transitioning to rotating greens that simulate diverse golf holes. It’s a hybrid fusion of real-world golf skill and immersive tech presentation–an experience that’s already proven successful in the men’s TGL league.
LPGA Commissioner Craig Kessler emphasized the league’s role in connecting fans more deeply with athletes.
“Partnering with TMRW Sports on WTGL reflects our belief that innovation can help the game reach new fans and create greater visibility for LPGA athletes,” Kessler said. “I’ve seen how new formats can engage audiences while showcasing both athlete personality and performance, and WTGL brings that spirit of innovation to the women’s game. It creates another global stage for our athletes – one that helps fans connect more deeply with them and continues to elevate the visibility and growth of women’s golf.”
Building on TGL’s Success
WTGL is rooted in the success of TGL, the tech-infused golf league founded by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Mike McCarley (CEO of TMRW Sports) that debuted in 2025 and quickly earned attention as golf’s most innovative spectator format.
TGL’s short, energetic matches–complete with mic’d players, studio-style broadcast elements, and advanced shot analytics–have delivered strong engagement metrics and attracted audiences traditionally underserved by golf.
According to PGA Tour, “Season 1 of TGL drew one of the youngest audiences in sports, second only to the NBA, in both median age (52) and percentage of audience in the adults 18-49 demo (41%).”
While specifics such as broadcast partners, team identities, and athlete rosters have yet to be revealed, McCarley stressed that the goal is to create a modern, media-focused competitive experience that ultimately complements the LPGA Tour’s global appeal.
“In partnership with the LPGA, WTGL is another step in creating a modern, media-focused version of a centuries-old game that appeals to today’s sports fan. Since the launch of TGL a year ago, TMRW Sports has been putting the pieces in place to create a women’s league featuring the best players in the world. Now, along with the LPGA and its athletes, we look forward to creating a stage to help showcase the stars of the LPGA,” McCarley said. “WTGL’s short-form, team golf format will engage new audiences and complement the LPGA Tour’s global appeal.”
Importantly, while WTGL will stand as its own competition, it isn’t a direct replacement for the LPGA’s existing schedule; rather, it will take place during the offseason and serve as a complementary showcase.
What Comes Next
The formation of WTGL has already sparked excitement among golfers, media, and fans alike. As details emerge (team lineups, franchise locations, broadcast deals), the league’s launch promises to be one of the most anticipated developments in women’s sports this decade.
“I think it means so much what TGL has done for the guys,” LPGA star Lexi Thompson said. “It brings a whole different fanbase to the game of golf – I think that’s what’s needed. It’s quicker golf, different shots, obviously, hitting into a screen. But having all those numbers, I think fans just get involved more and see the personalities of the guys, and now the women’s.
“So, I think it’s just amazing for the game of golf in general, especially the women’s side.”
