On Jan. 5, the Las Vegas Raiders decided it was best to cut the Pete Carroll era after one season in which the team went 3-14. Nonetheless, that decision isn’t sitting well with former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman.

Sherman outlined several reasons why the Raiders were better off keeping Carroll for at least another season, including cultural and financial motives.

“I didn’t see it coming,” Sherman said in a Jan. 7 video from “The Richard Sherman Podcast.” “I didn’t think they would be that impatient. Sure, this was a rough year. Obviously, Chip Kelly wasn’t the guy they thought he was. His system doesn’t necessarily work in the National Football League. It works in college, and it works well in college. It does not work in the National Football League.

“It’s odd that Pete would have hired him when he’s played him as an opponent, and we’ve had a lot of success against that system. I thought that would give him another chance, another year to continue to establish the culture, also knowing that they’re paying other coaches—your previous coaches—a lot of money.”

Pete Carroll Joins a Long List of Fired Coaches

Moreover, Sherman explained how much money the Silver and Black are paying coaches not to coach for them, which is why he didn’t understand the decision to fire Carroll after one season.

“They’re paying Antonio Pierce, $8 million; Josh McDaniels, $10 million; Jon Gruden, $10 million; Pete Carroll, $16 million; and Chip Kelly, $6 6. Who signs up for that? Sherman added. “That’s why you don’t fire.

“If nothing else, you don’t fire him because you don’t want to be paying another coach to not coach for your team. I think that’s the thing, the issue that I have with all of this is: what are you guys doing? How do you think anybody’s ever going to have success with this if you don’t give them more than a year?”

Tom Brady Deserves Blame for Las Vegas’ Situation

With the Silver and Black now looking for another head coach in two years under minority owner Tom Brady and general manager John Spytek, NBC Sports NFL insider Mike Florio didn’t hold back on the former NFL QB.

Despite being only a minority owner, Brady carries a lot of weight, and Florio believes he should be criticized for the disastrous 2025 season and the mess the Raiders find themselves in.

“He was brought in to stabilize the organization, Florio said on the Jan. 5 edition of “PFT PM. Owner Mark Davis said so himself. Brady got a slice of the team at a below-market rate, in part because Davis is buying Tom’s expertise. Remember, last year, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that this is Tom’s show now. That was a year ago.

“If it was really a show, it would be cancelled. It was a mess. Brady somehow has avoided the blame for it. Not many. I know I’m one of them. We have to call it like we see it. This is partially Brady’s fault. He’s the one who’s pressing buttons, and he’s the one who’s choosing not to go all in. I’ve said for weeks now, Brady’s got to go all in or all out. You can’t do this job halfway. We’ll see how much time he spends on it going forward.”
