Bryan Zaragoza’s summer move to Spanish side RCD Espanyol marks the fourth loan spell the Spaniard has been on since his move to Bayern Munich Munich two years ago, with his previous spells being at Osasuna, Celta Vigo and AS Roma. The latter two loan moves were attached with options to buy that could became permanent under certain conditions, as long as he played enough and his team achieved enough success in their domestic league season. Unfortunately, become former Granada CF player failed to fulfill those conditions and was sent back to Munich, where he was promptly and unceremoniously put on the transfer list.
His loan move to Espanyol initially seemed to break the trend by including a mandatory transfer at the end of the loan, but, if Spanish news site Mundo Deportivo’s recent report is to be believed, this loan is very similar to the previous two failed ones: An option to buy that becomes permanent under certain conditions. @iMiaSanMia captures all the details:
The €8m option to buy in Bryan Zaragoza’s contract becomes mandatory if two conditions are met:
• Espanyol stays up in La Liga
• Bryan plays a minimum of 45 minutes in 20 league matches
If both conditions are met, the Spaniard would sign a 5-year contract until 2032.

Yeah, this looks bad. How confident can Bayern fans truly be that these conditions will lead to a sale if they have already failed time and again? But let us look at the raw numbers at the moment. Zaragoza officially completed his move to Espanyol on August 27th. He then played 10 minutes in his first match, 15 in his second and came on at half-time to play 45 minutes in his latest match against Rayo Vallecano, at the time of writing.
Espanyol have played six games in La Liga and Zaragoza has completed at least 45 minutes once. In 32 games, he will have to do so 19 more times for option to buy to become permanent. Furthermore, Espanyol need to stay in the league, having been promoted two seasons ago. It is not impossible for these conditions to be met, but it does not offer the brightest of hope, either.
Though if there is any location that is sure to turn Zaragoza’s career around, it would have to be at RCD Espanyol Barcelona. Given the Spaniard’s record against FC Barcelona, surely he can thrive best in Barcelona. …Right?
