A Maryland man who was hunting in Delaware shot and killed a woman after mistaking her for a deer, Delaware State Police said.
The incident occurred at around 7:40 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, in an open field near South Old State Road, north of East Robbins Road in Ellendale, Sussex County, police said.
The man, identified as 74-year-old Walter Moorhead, of Salisbury, Maryland, was hunting for deer in a ground blind when he fired the shot that killed a 39-year-old woman from Georgetown, Delaware, police said.
The woman’s identity has not yet been released, but she was walking with a man and two children at the time she was shot, police said.
The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time after the shooting, police said.
Moorhead said he believed he saw a deer when he fired the shot and has been with manslaughter and related charges, police said.
Moorhead was arraigned and released on $43,000 bond, police said.
