Westport officials say they are still assessing the damage and assisting in recovery following the flash flooding and storms from September 13.
They say seven inches of rain were seen in parts of the city and in surrounding areas in a three-hour span.
“Our hearts go out to the residents and businesses recovering from this flood, including those displaced from their homes or unable to reopen their businesses,” said First Selectman Kevin Christie. “Many are still cleaning up, and some face extensive repairs and a prolonged recovery. We are focused on addressing immediate needs and supporting the work ahead.”
They say about 130 flood-related incidents occurred with 13 people rescued from cars and five evacuated from a care facility. According to officials, the Jesup Road Bridge at Imperial Avenue is also still closed while engineers are assessing damage.
They say the storm also caused the wastewater treatment plant to flood and forced some stations to shut down and sustain damage.
Hamden is also working on recovering from the storm with officials saying that, though there were no injuries or deaths reported in the city, damage is still being documented.
They say these are the latest updates:
- Over 1,300 households and businesses have submitted damage reports to the Crisis Track portal. A team at the state’s Emergency Management and Homeland Security Department is reviewing all the submissions.
- A ‘Public Assistance Initial Damage Assessment’ will be coming out to determine eligibility for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
People should report damage caused by the storm through the State’s CrisisTrack survey.
“Reports help document the full extent of damage and support the process of determining whether the State may be eligible for FEMA or Small Business Administration disaster programs,” they said. “The survey is not a claim or application for assistance, does not guarantee aid and does not replace reporting damage to an insurer.”
