A San Francisco supervisor held a hearing Thursday to make sure the city is prepared for expected massive crowds for Fleet Week.
Supervisor Stephen Sherrill said San Francisco underestimated crowds at both a 4th of July celebration and Formula 1 demonstration, which triggered problems and even bigger gridlock in the city.
“I heard they are assuming there will be larger crowds and I think that’s a great start,” Sherrill said of the city’s preparation for Fleet Week, which includes 20% more porta potties and 30% more capacity for MTA service. “What I want to make sure happens is that there is real-time coordination to understand if there are any traffic impacts.”
The supervisor also said the city is coordinating with rideshare and autonomous vehicle companies to manage where they can and can’t drop off and pick up riders.
A public affairs officer for San Francisco Fleet Week said after producing the event for 45 years, they are confident in their planning process and expect another successful celebration.
