San Jose is one step closer to choosing a new name for its downtown plaza, with the options now narrowed to two.
The plaza was previously named for labor leader Cesar Chavez, but city workers covered his name following serious allegations of sexual assault and misconduct against Chavez.
The city then opened the renaming process to the public, with about 10,000 San Jose residents weighing in.
As part of the process, the city sought a name that would honor the people behind the farmworker labor movement rather than one individual.
Of the dozens of suggestions submitted, two finalists will go before the San Jose Parks and Recreation Commission for a vote Wednesday: Plaza de San Jose, which received the most public support, and Farmworker Plaza.
The commission is scheduled to meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Roosevelt Community Center near East Santa Clara and 20th streets. People who cannot attend in person can watch the meeting online.
The name selected by the commission will be recommended to the full San Jose City Council, which is expected to make a final decision in October.
