Penn State hockey has found its goalie of the future with a commitment from Mason Courville:
Currently at 16, Courville will be eligible to play at Penn State starting in the 2028-29 season. After an outstanding run with the WB/Scranton Knights Junior team, he joined the Flint Firebirds of the OHL in 2025-26. He posted a .893 save percentage and 3.06 GAA in 18 starts. Courville was one of seven 16-year olds to start a game at goaltender in the OHL, and one of two to start more than 10 games.
The NCAA rule change giving eligibility to CHL players has benefited Penn State in many ways. Players like Gavin McKenna take the spotlight, but perhaps the most important development for the program is identifying talent at goaltender. With Josh Fleming the current starter, Ryder Fetterolf joining the team this season, and Courville waiting in the wings in two years, Penn State has figured out the long-term plan in net.
