Drug company Vitruvias Therapeutics Inc. has issued a nationwide recall for thyroid tablets after it was found the medication could be “superpotent,” meaning the pills — meant to treat hypothyroidism — could potentially lead to hyperthyroidism if taken.
The voluntary recall applies to Lot 504950 of 30 mg Thyroid Tablets that were prescribed to patients. According to a news release posted by the Food and Drug Administration, Vitruvias Therapeutics is “proactively notifying its wholesalers by email and phone to discontinue distribution of the product.”
The drug company said it was arranging for the recalled tablets to be destroyed, but warned patients to not stop taking the medication without speaking to their doctor.
According to the release, dated Aug. 24, the tablets were distributed nationwide from Jan. 31 2025, to Sept. 30, 2025. A full description of the recalled product and the label can be found below.
| Product | NDC | Lot | Exp Date | Units Released | Units Sold | First Distribution Date | Last Distribution Date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thyroid Tablets, USP 30 mg | 69680- 166-00 | 504950 | 9/30/2026 | 3,655 | 1955 | 1/31/2025 | 9/30/2025 |

The recall comes weeks after another recall was issued for levothyroxine sodium tablets, a different prescription thyroid medication, after it found some pills to be “subpotent,” with less active ingredients.
Taking superpotent Thyroid tables can lead to overactive thyroid, the announcement said, and cause a number of adverse health impacts including heat intolerance, fatigue, nervousness, muscle weakness, hypertension, chest pain, rapid heart rate, or heart rhythm disturbances.
The population at greatest risk is elderly and pregnant patients, with excess levels of thyroid hormones leading to cardiac issues and higher rates of maternal fetal complications.
According to the drug maker, no reports of adverse or harmful health events related to the recall have been reported.
