Several people, including three children, were displaced after a fire damaged multiple apartments at a far north Dallas apartment complex Tuesday night.
According to Dallas Fire Rescue, firefighters responded to the Prestonwood Trails Apartments on the 6300 block of Keller Springs Road just after 9 p.m. after receiving reports of a fire at the three-story complex.
When crews arrived, they found flames coming from a second-story balcony. The fire later spread to the third floor, prompting DFR to call a second alarm to bring in additional personnel and resources.
Firefighters eventually brought the blaze under control, but not before four apartment units were affected. The department initially believed six units were impacted.
Officials said six adults and three children were displaced. The American Red Cross responded to assist the affected families with emergency housing and other support.
Neighbor John Gilbert said he could hear the emergency response unfolding from his home nearby.
“I heard the sirens, and you could hear them banging on everybody’s door saying, ‘Get out, get out, get out,’” Gilbert said. “They’re going door to door. It was loud enough for me to hear it inside my house, up the street.”
Despite the damage and disruption, Gilbert said he was relieved that everyone escaped safely.
“My daughter has friends that live there, not in that apartment, but just over. They’re kind of displaced,” he said. “I’m glad it seems everybody got out safely. I hate to see our neighbors over here displaced, but it looks like everybody got out safe, which is good.”
DFR said all residents have been accounted for and no injuries were reported.
After the fire, elevated carbon monoxide levels prompted an evacuation of the entire 18-unit building.
The fire department said apartment management relocated seven families to alternative units the management company already owned; the others secured temporary housing.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
