There is no doubt that the owners ALWAYS hire the person that they think will most help them win. But there is not a single person that enters the discussion when looking for a HC, OC, or DC.
The reason we interview is that we want to hire a person that we can communicate with and shares the same goals and methods as us. This is where the cultural bias slips in.
In any interviewing process there is a lot of built in cultural bias.
People look to hire people that are like them (culturally) ... this is a well known and documented bias. When the hiring team is made to think about their biases and work through it ... it is more likely to lead to merit based hiring.
In the NFL it is a really small community of coaches ... less than 400. They all talk ... this networking is by far the most important component of getting hired (for any of us, and any of them).
