Inspector general report details moments before Bristol officer fatally shot man

A Bristol police officer shot and killed a 43-year-old man who was holding a rifle during a well-being check Friday night, according to a preliminary report and body camera and police drone footage released Monday by the Connecticut Office of Inspector General.

The man was identified as 43-year-old Jakub Dziemaszkiewicz of Bristol.

At around 8:38 p.m. on Friday, two friends of Dziemaszkiewicz called the Bristol Police Department. They said they were concerned about his well-being and requested a check at his home on Woodbridge Road, according to the preliminary report.

One of the callers told police that Dziemaszkiewicz had numerous firearms and “would not go down without a fight,” the report stated.

Police determined through databases that Dziemaszkiewicz had registered more than a dozen firearms before sending four officers to his home. Police also flew a drone over Dziemaszkiewicz’s home, according to the report.

Officer Mark McGrane approached the property ahead of the other officers and encountered Dziemaszkiewicz holding a rifle, the report stated.

According to the report, McGrane repeatedly told Dziemaszkiewicz to drop the weapon and show his hands. Body camera footage shows McGrane then fired three shots, which struck Dziemaszkiewicz in the face, neck, and torso.

The body camera footage that the inspector general’s office provided had no audio.

Dziemaszkiewicz was pronounced dead at the scene. A rifle and Glock semi-automatic pistol were found next to his body, the report stated.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled his death a homicide caused by gunshot wounds to the head, neck, and torso.

The shooting remains under investigation.
