Rep. Joe Courtney's office says they received letter with suspicious substance

Rep. Joe Courtney (CT-02) said his office in Enfield opened an envelope that had an ‘unknown white substance’ in it on Friday.

Sen. Chris Murphy and Sen. Richard Blumenthal are among the lawmakers whose offices were sent letters containing suspicious substances as federal authorities investigate similar mailings sent to congressional and election offices nationwide on Thursday.

Courtney said that earlier on Friday, one of his staff members opened the mailed envelope, which contained the substance and a malicious letter. The staff member was not injured and the office notified the United States Capitol Police.

Courtney thanked members with the Enfield Police Department, the Connecticut State Police Bomb Squad, and the FBI for their response and investigation.

“The clear malicious intent behind these mailings, whether to physically harm or cause alarm among dedicated Congressional staff, will not deter them from serving constituents who rely on their expertise and care for help,” Courtney said in a statement.
