If this was any other company besides valve this would go down in history as one of the most fumbled hardware launches of any major company in the last 15 years.
- Delayed multiple times and then just randomly dropped with all information coming from leaks and people obsessively data mining and watching shipping manifests.
- priced ridiculously even though it barely makes use of any of the components that have inflated in price and valve almost certainly secured most of the hardware before that was an issue anyway since this thing has been in development for years.
- hardware Already bordering on obsolete for the market segment on release and aging by the day. Lcd panels? Really? No controller tracking? (Supposedly coming) No hand tracking.
- nickle and dime nonsense. A SIXTY DOLLAR hand strap kit for a piece of hardware that costs over a grand? And you can't even keep them in stock? You know how many unit you have and you know most people would want one, why did you not produce a minimum of a 1:1 ratio between strap kits and headsets?
- vague and opaque waitlist/reservation system that is basically just two waitlists. No useful information at all except whether or not you can expect to receive your order email this year or next if you're on reserve. If you're on the wait-list you're totally in the dark. But if you're on the reserve list valve will at some point without warning drop an order email on you and you'll have 3 days to buy or lose your spot for good. Hope you just have the money lying around for the next year!
- dozens of units already on eBay because it turns out there was basically no defense at all from having people use multiple steam accounts to reserve. A problem that could have been nearly eliminated with a significant deposit required to reserve. This gets rid of all the casual scalpers and leaves only serious buyers and those with enough capital.
- already lots of hardware issues. Lots of rmas for one screen not working, frequent software bugs, sleep mode issues, locking tabs keep breaking off. Even though the headset has been in development for ages it still comes off as a beta experience.
They basically did everything wrong. And yet they'll barely catch any heat for this because people are so jaded by companies like Meta that they're willing to pay more for a worse experience out of spite.
gaben is such a genius.
