Hundreds of dogs received a break from Los Angeles-area shelters over the weekend thanks to dozens of animal lovers who volunteered to take them out for the day.
Tails were wagging and there were smiles aplenty as nearly 400 dogs from six Los Angeles Animal Services shelters were taken out of the kennels and into the world. LAAS partnered with nonprofit Best Friends Animal Society’s (BFAS) LA branch to make the doggone fun day possible.
“Seeing a lobby full of people who took time out of their weekend to come get a shelter dog out just for a couple of hours is amazing,” said Brittany Thorn, Executive Director of Best Friends Animal Society in LA. “It’s really incredible. We knew Angelenos really cared about animals, but today was proof.”

Steven Szydio, who signed up for the event, was paired with a bull terrier named Chico. Video of the two showed Chico ready to take on the world and finding a cozy spot on some nearby grass to pause for a lick of water.
“I was so excited to meet Chico and get him out of the shelter, get him to see the world and have fun making new friends, meet some other friends along the way,” Szydio said.
The event resulted in 23 dogs finding their forever homes and 37 dogs being placed into foster care, according to BFAS.
