Authorities found hundreds of cats, some apparently malnourished or showing signs of neglect, while serving a search warrant Monday morning at a nonprofit cat rescue in Upland, police said.
Upland police served the warrant at about 9 a.m. at the rescue, located at 1846 W. 11th St., according to Upland police Sgt. Eric Divincenzo.
Authorities estimated that between 300 and 500 cats were inside the business.
The City of Upland Animal Control is handling the bulk of the incident after receiving complaints from tenants in the building who reported concerns that animals were being abused or neglected, Divincenzo said. Tenants also complained about odors coming from the rescue.
Some of the cats were found in varying states of neglect and appeared to be malnourished, according to police.
It was not immediately clear whether any of the animals had suffered other forms of abuse.
The nonprofit animal rescue operated primarily under the names Furry Friends Resort and Serenity Spa and Cat Lounge.
Authorities had not announced any arrests or potential charges as investigators continued searching the business.
