On Tuesday, a Paris court awarded Kim Kardashian €1 in damages (about $1.15) for her 2016 robbery, in which thieves impersonating police officers broke into her hotel room and robbed her of $10 million in cash and jewelry.
As the nearly ten-year legal process came to a close, all eight robbers were found guilty in May 2025, and after serving their time in pretrial detention, none went back to prison. But according to Kim’s lawyers, all she sought in addition was the single euro.
“The experience was deeply traumatic, and its impact has stayed with us. Today’s decision is not about the compensation, but about accountability and recognition,” read Kim’s joint statement with stylist Simone Harouche, who was also present at the robbery. “We are thankful to the Court and everyone who supported us throughout this process, and we hope to now move forward and continue to heal.”
Hear that? Kim believes in the French justice system—even though her trial judge previously asked Harouche if Kim puts a target on her back by posting about her “jewels of great value.” But never mind the victim-blaming…
Additionally, the court awarded the hotel €50,000 (about $57,741), and the receptionist on duty €109,516 (about $126,472) for emotional damages.
Kim has previously opened up about the lasting distress the event left her with: For a time, she couldn’t sleep without four to six guards by her side; she stopped posting her location in real time; and she stopped wearing diamonds altogether. That night in 2016, when the armed robbers broke into Kardashian’s hotel room, zip-tied her, and taped her mouth shut, she feared for her life and, above all, feared that her sister Kourtney Kardashian would return to the room and find her dead.
Last May, when she appeared in court to testify, Kim wore an $8,100 diamond-studded 18-karat white-gold ear cuff from Briony Raymond, a large emerald-cut diamond ring, and a $1.5 million diamond necklace. So no, it wasn’t about the lost jewelry. But showing up to court wearing 8 million dollars in diamonds is quite the power move.
Unrelated to the profound trauma she suffered, how am I just now learning—again, after an entire decade of this incident being parsed on the internet and on Kim’s TV shows—that the thieves are apparently known in France as “the grandpa robbers?” In French, “les papys braqueurs.” I guess six of the eight criminals were in their 60s and 70s at the time of trial, but “Grandpa Robbers” sounds more like the name of a shitty movie starring Kevin Hart and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
