A Baby Gaga and a Baby Lena Dunham announcement in under one week? How will the Venn diagram of Little Monsters and adult Marnies survive this amount of excitement?
On Wednesday, Dunham announced that she welcomed her first child with her husband, Luis Felber, in perhaps the chicest way possible—an essay in Vogue, in which she discusses her reverence for her surrogate, recounts the delivery of her daughter, and ponders baby fashion. (It’s Vogue, after all).
After previously opening up about her struggle with endometriosis and subsequent hysterectomy in her 2026 memoir Famesick, Dunham reflected in her essay that she was not jealous of her surrogate (“that this woman could do for a child—for my child—what I could not”)—but the baby (“for the chance to be tucked into someone who radiated such safety.”) “I could just tell she knew how to steer an SUV in the snow,” she wrote.
Dunham also recalls when she first went to meet the surrogate with her own mother (over matcha, obviously), and how, after the surrogate left, she and her mom “fought so hard” that they had to take separate cabs home. “Nothing like staring motherhood in the face, no matter how much you’ve wanted it or for how long, to make you instantly regress into a surly 14-year-old with the needs of an anxiously attached toddler.”
As Dunham waited for the day to come, she got really into shopping, specifically for fashionable baby outfits. So get ready to see the world’s most stylish baby. She also revealed that her first job was at a baby clothes store in Tribeca, where she once “sold a pile of cashmere baby tank tops to Gwyneth Paltrow for an infant Apple.”
Their baby girl ended up being 13 days late (Don’t tell Taylor, Swift). Per Dunham:
And then, 13 days late, in the face of a solar eclipse and a meteor shower, she announced herself. I sat on a hospital bed, between the legs of a woman I hadn’t known a year ago, waiting for a glimpse of this person who I had been waiting for with something related to patience, but also none at all. I was so focused on our surrogate—in awe at her concentration, her period of quiet followed by what sounded like a roar—I forgot to look down until I heard our baby’s cry. I saw her face, gasping just as she did. Her eyes, wide and unfocused, taking in the light and shadow, blinking rapidly.”“Talk to her,” the midwife said. “Say hello.”
“Hello,” I said. “I’m your mama. You…you look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We’ve been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come.”
Cute. Beautiful. Good Soup. Congratulations. And as for Baby Lena Dunham, your mother once “divided a room” of A-listers at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s rehearsal dinner, so you’re in for a great life.
