I guess we weren’t done barfing today.
In bizarre and slightly nauseating news, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Tex.) appeared at a Chris Brown concert over the weekend to officially inaugurate him into the U.S. Congressional Record (a ceremonial title bestowed by a member of Congress)—and, consequently, pave over the singer’s long-winded history of being accused of abuse. Which. Happened. On. Multiple. Occasions.
“Right now, we are experiencing Black joy to the highest level, and I wanted to make sure we document that,” she said at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington. “Right here in Dallas, we got a real one,” before hugging the domestic abuser and alleged rapist onstage.
Crockett was accompanied by State Rep. Venton Jones (D-Dallas), who’s running for reelection, and awarded R&B artist Usher—who was also performing—the same accolade. With outsized pomp for Brown, however. “We are here because of Chris Brown!” she lauded.
I’m not sure what she wants her next chapter to be, but I wish she’d close the current one before doing things like this.

The surprise was disappointing for many—not least for the fact that there are about 234829349234 things going wrong for women (and too many things going right for their abusers!) right now. But also because… like… why’d she do that?
“700,000 Black women have become unemployed since the start of Trump 2,” tweeted Dr. Gabrielle A. Perry, the founder of the Thurman Perry Foundation. “Women are being attacked legislatively with the loss of reproductive rights, education access, and more. And Jasmine Crockett made time to glorify an abuser of women who JUST settled a case for letting a dog mangle his employees.”

Roxane Gay, another author and podcaster, posted on Threads: “What the hell is [Crockett] thinking? This is such a bizarre and unacceptable misstep.”
Chris Brown is a repeat abuser, and Jasmine Crockett honored him onstage. I don’t care if she was there to promote a down-ballot candidate. The story was always gonna be her and Chris. And she seems perfectly fine with that.

A few weeks ago, Crockett had been asked by CNN’s Laura Coates whether she’d help James Talarico—whom she was defeated by in the state’s primary in March—campaign for office against (cue eye-roll) Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Crockett replied that she’d be “campaigning down-ballot” to ensure others on the ticket wouldn’t get “overshadowed,” meaning she’d be supporting other Dem. candidates like, say, Jones. Welp. That’s… one way to do it, I guess.
