Michigan State has received plenty of good news on the recruiting trail this offseason. That tune changed recently when the Spartans were left off the official visit schedule for a big fish.
Four-star wing Asa Montgomery announced that he is visiting eight schools this fall and Michigan State was not one of them.
The Spartans offered Montgomery last month. While this does not completely take them out of the running for the Powder Springs, Georgia product, it is telling that he did not commit to a visit to East Lansing.
Montgomery’s visits will begin next weekend with LSU and end at the end of November in Louisville. In between, Montgomery will visit Florida, UConn, Providence, North Carolina, Duke, and Arizona.
The Spartans recently scheduled visits with four-star point guard Antonio Pemberton and 2028’s Cole Kelly. Head coach Tom Izzo has yet to schedule one with a wing so he might continue to push for Montgomery to come to the campus.
Montgomery is currently ranked as the No. 4 player in Georgia and No. 28 player overall, according to 247Sports Composite. He has built the reputation as a volume scorer, according to his scouting report via Adam Finkelstein.
In the EYCL, he was a volume scorer with the ultimate green light. Everything went through him and he put up a whopping 27.9 points on 54/34/76 shooting along with 10.2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3.3 stocks (1.4 steals and 1.9 blocks) per game. With USA Basketball though, he bought into being a role playing four. He provided energy, offensive rebounding, cutting, defensive versatility, and playmaking within their full-court pressure, even though he was surprisingly reluctant to shoot at times.
He has good instincts on both ends of the floor and a nose for the ball defensively. Even in FIBA competition, he showed an ability to get his hands on a lot of balls, rebound it well enough to match-up with opposing fours, and be switchable on the ball.
What’s exciting about Montgomery is that he shows a willingness and ability to do the “little things” that will help him get on the floor right away at the next level, but also has a clear upside.
