Los Angeles County had its first reported influenza-associated death of the flu season, the LA County Department of Public healthy reported Wednesday.
The deceased is an “older person” with underlying health conditions. LA public health officials believe this person had not received a flu vaccination for this flu season, which typically runs between October and May every year.
While the flu infection rate remains low in the month of November, health officials believe more people would get sick, with more traveling and indoor gatherings being expected during the holiday season.

The flu activity typically peaks in December and January.
“The best protection this season is getting an updated flu vaccine. Protecting yourself also helps keep your community safer,” said Dr. Muntu Davis, LA County Health Officer.
Experts recommend people be vaccinated at least two weeks before holiday traveling or gatherings as it takes a couple of weeks for protection to build.
Other recommendations include wearing a well-fitting mask in crowded indoor spaces, especially when it comes to families with the elderly or children younger than 5 years as well as pregnant women.
