BYU added another piece to its 2026-2027 roster as Lithuanian Guard/Wing Dovydas Buika committed to BYU. He is rated a 4-Star prospect by Rivals.
Buika is a 6-foot-6 playmaking wing who has point guard skills. He burst onto the season last summer during the FIBA U18 EuroBasket tournament, where he was named All-Tournament Second Team. In a win over Serbia, Buika showed his overall skillset in a near triple-double with 20 points, 9 assists, and 8 rebounds on 4-5 shooting from three.
Buika has been on the radar of high-major college programs for awhile. In late November, he took official visits to both Arizona and Illinois. In mid-June, Buika told me BYU had been recruiting him heavily and had put him touch with Jake Wahlin, who speaks Lithuanian from his time as a LDS missionary there.
Buika is 19 years old and will turn 20 in January. He’s not the most athletic player and can struggle to create space at times with his lack of athleticism. His playmaking ability, skill, and ability to operate in the pick-and-roll are what overcome that and can make him a dangerous player. He’ll fight to get into BYU’s rotation this year to give BYU a secondary creator and someone who can operate in the PNR. I like his fit next to Rob Wright. Rob last year really improved his catch-and-shoot ability from three. With AJ gone, Buika can give BYU another wrinkle by playing on the floor with Rob and operating as an initiator and playmaker in ball screen situations, which can free up Rob from having to be so ball dominant and spot up at times. Buika can be a streaky shooter, but he has certainly shown the ability to knock down threes in addition to his playmaking ability. In addition to that 4/5 three-point performance versus Serbia I mentioned early, he shot 5-11 from three versus Latvia in the same tournament.
BYU now has three roster spots to fill with the signing of Buika.
