After Jack Kelly was drafted by the NY Giants in the sixth round, BYU had its second player drafted as tight end Carsen Ryan was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the 248 overall pick in the 7th round of the NFL Draft. Carsen is the first BYU tight end drafted since Dennis Pitta in 2010.
After two seasons at UCLA and one at Utah, Ryan transferred to BYU for his final season where he had by far his best year. A threat as both a receiver and blocker, Ryan finished the season with 45 receptions, 620 receiving yards, and 3 touchdowns. His best performance came in the Pop-Tarts bowl versus Georgia Tech, where he reeled in 8 catches for 120 receiving yards. He’ll join former Utah teammate Spencer Fano in Cleveland, who was drafted by the Browns #9 overall. New Browns head coach Todd Monken employed numerous multiple tight end sets while in Baltimore, which could help Ryan’s case to make the team.
