Hoax gun threats led to lockdowns and a large police response at two Miami-Dade schools on Wednesday, officials said.
Kinloch Park Elementary School on Northwest 1st Street and Kinloch Park Middle School on Northwest 3rd Street were both placed on lockdown.
Miami-Dade Schools Police said a call came in of someone threatening to come to a school with a gun.
The call appeared to be unfounded but prompted the lockdowns and campus search, officials said.
“I just thought I was gonna die, I thought it was really, really real, and I thought they were gonna come into the classroom,” 6th grader Emily Vasquez said. “I was scared.”
Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed a large amount of officers at the schools along with a crowd of parents.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools officials said a third school, West Miami Middle, also received a hoax threat.
“We knew right from the beginning that it was going to be fake, however, the parents don’t know that, the kids don’t know that, so they’re leaving their jobs as fast as possible, they could get into an accident on the way here, so that’s something we take very seriously,” Miami-Dade Schools Police Sgt. Jandro Suarez said.
The incident caused plenty of panic as hundreds of parents showed up fearing the worst.
“It was crazy, I didn’t know what to do, I was just speeding on the highway just to get here,” father Brian Valle said.
No other details were immediately known.
