Judge won't drop domestic violence case against boxer Gervonta Davis as new video surfaces

A judge refused to dismiss charges against professional boxer Gervonta Davis in an alleged violent attack on his ex-girlfriend at a Miami Gardens gentlemen’s club last year as new video shows part of the encounter.

Davis, 31, was arrested in January on charges of battery, false imprisonment and attempted kidnapping in the alleged incident that happened Oct. 27 at a club where the woman worked.

In court Wednesday, defense attorneys were asking a judge to throw out the case, arguing that prosecutors failed to properly review evidence before filing charges.

But the judge denied the motion to dismiss.

Davis, also known as “Tank,” is accused of grabbing his ex-girlfriend by her hair and throat and forcing her down a flight of stairs at the club.

Video obtained by TMZ Sports appears to show part of the incident.

Prosecutors claim Davis acted without lawful authority and attempted to force the victim against her will.

But court records show Davis’ defense attorney filed a motion arguing that prosecutors did not properly review what they call “exculpatory evidence,” or evidence that could help clear Davis before charging him.

“As far as I’m concerned, the information as it is filed today is tainted because we have not been given that opportunity,” defense attorney Simon Steckel said.

Steckel said there’s more to the case than just the video.

“The video speaks for itself. However, what you guys may or may not know is that within an hour or so after that video was made, she went home with him and spent the next nine hours with him with no fear, with no problems, and that’s also documented and videotaped,” he said.

He also added that he believes the case is about extortion.

“We believe this is a shakedown. A shakedown by the alleged victim of Mr. Davis for money because he had a fight coming up within two weeks after this alleged incident in which he was scheduled to make a lot of money in a fight with Jake Paul,” Steckel said.

Davis has already pleaded not guilty to the charges. The trial is set to begin May 26.
