Major hard pass on Flores, for multiple reasons. First, if we view Mike Tomlin's departure as an opportunity for the organization to move forward with fresh eyes, and fresh ideas, especially on offense, I don't see how Flores, who in many ways wouldn't be much of a departure from Tomlin, fits that bill.
Second, Flores' tenure in Miami did not go well, in terms of record, in terms of his relationship with his players, and his grievance posturing when fired. Way to much baggage for my taste. I'm not a fan of retread coach hires to begin with and especially ones who left their former job on bad terms. There's a real fear that if they hired this guy, and things went poorly, that the Rooney's would be terrified of cutting bait with him, knowing that he has a history of pushing racial grievances. I would stay clear of that.
Third, I'm sticking with the idea that no team in the NFL needs an offensive minded, young, innovative HC more than the Steelers do. The Steelers have been stagnant on offense for YEARS. I don't buy the argument that you bring in a guy like Flores to be HC and then hire a good OC. In reality, as we saw with Tomlin, the HC sets the tone philosophically on what you're going to do on both sides of the ball. If we hire Flores as HC, we are going to get HIS pick for OC and I have little reason to believe he would be any great departure from Tomlin in who he would pick, and what the offense would look like. Besides, even if he did pick a young OC who came in and really pushed our offense mindset into the 21st century, they'd get poached as a HC within a year or two.
I'm sticking with my preference for Scheelhasse as the guy I want.
