Authorities probe officer-involved shooting in San Leandro

Authorities in San Leandro are investigating an officer-involved shooting that followed a brief vehicle pursuit and foot chase early Monday morning, police said.

The shooting happened just after 12:30 a.m. on railroad tracks southwest of the intersection of Davis Street and Alvarado Street, according to the San Leandro Police Department.

Police said an officer minutes earlier tried to stop a black Mercedes sedan, but the driver sped away. The car later crashed into a curb near Davis and Alvarado streets. Several people inside the vehicle ran away, including the driver, who officers alleged was seen running south on Alvarado Street while carrying a rifle.

As more officers arrived to help, one of them found the suspect on railroad tracks west of Alvarado Street.

Police alleged the suspect was still holding the rifle and did not comply with commands to drop the weapon. An officer then fired, leading to the shooting.

The suspect was later taken into custody by other officers, and the rifle was recovered, police said. No injuries were reported.

In line with department policy, the case will reportedly be reviewed through both criminal and administrative investigations by San Leandro police units. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office will also conduct a separate investigation.

The officer involved, a 4-and-a-half-year veteran cop in San Leandro, has been placed on administrative leave, according to the department.

Police said they are limiting the release of further information for now to protect the integrity of the investigation, saying that more details will be shared “in compliance with the law.”
