2 dead, 1 critically injured in shooting in New Haven, CT

Two people are dead in a shooting on Congress Avenue in New Haven. Officers responded to the area of 700 Congress Avenue around 1:45 a.m. and found two people dead inside a home. A third person was shot and was taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to police. Police Chief Karl Jacobson said police believe 41-year-old Kerwin Romero opened fire during a domestic violence incident inside the home. Two women were shot before Romero turned the gun on himself, Jacobson said. Romero, and 35-year-old Jennifer Adams were both pronounced dead at the scene. The second woman, whom the chief described as Romero’s 38-year-old girlfriend, was rushed to the hospital where she is listed in critical condition. He did not release the woman’s identity. The girlfriend’s two children, aged 13 and 10, were inside the home at the time of the shooting, Jacobson said. The children were not physically hurt, but are receiving support services from the city and are being cared for by family members. Police said they have had no prior domestic violence incidents in New Haven involving Romero and his girlfriend, but they said Romero was arrested for a domestic incident in West Haven in July involving a different person. Jacobson said Romero has been arrested in New Haven in the past, including for a shooting in 2012.

Several of Bruins' top prospects are on fire early in 2025-26 season

The Boston Bruins’ draft history has been heavily scrutinized over the last decade or so. Finding the right players in the draft and then developing them into consistently productive NHL players has often proved challenging for Boston. The good news for the Bruins is the quality of their prospect pool hasn’t been this good in a while. Many of the team’s recent draft picks, including its last two first-round selections, are playing quite well to begin the 2025-26 season. The most encouraging development has been the performance of 2024 first-rounder Dean Letourneau, who scored zero goals with just two assists in 36 games for Boston College as a freshman last season. He already has 11 points (five goals, six assists) in just 13 games this season. Not only is Letourneau generating scoring chances for himself and his teammates, he’s using his 6-foot-7 frame to carve out positioning in front of the net and win puck battles all over the ice. It’s rare to find a player with his size and offensive skill. Letourneau is only 19 years old, and he still has a lot of areas to improve, but seeing him start to put it together for the Eagles is a very encouraging sign for the B’s. The Bruins chose Letourneau’s teammate, James Hagens, with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2025 draft. Hagens has already scored six goals in 13 games after scoring 11 in 37 games for the Eagles last season. His 13 total points are tied for the team lead. Hagens’ elite playmaking ability and smooth skating make him a nightmare to defend. He added plenty of strength in the offseason, and it shows with the way he’s forechecking and battling for pucks. He has the potential to be a first-line center, which is what the Bruins desperately need. Hagens and Letourneau aren’t the only Bruins prospects firing on all cylinders right now. Will Zellers, who the B’s acquired as part of the Charlie Coyle trade with the Colorado Avalanche last season, already has a team-leading seven goals in 12 games for the University of North Dakota. After playing in the USHL last season and leading all players with 44 goals, Zellers has made a seamless transition to the college game. Whether it’s a one-timer from the circle or a wrist shot from in close, Zellers’ shot is a rocket. His offensive repertoire is really impressive for a freshman. The Bruins have other prospects who are shining early in the season, but these three are the most impressive so far. Boston has a lot of roster weaknesses at the NHL level to address, and one of the biggest is a lack of impact players offensively. David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie are the only Bruins forwards who put any kind of fear into opponents. Luckily for the Bruins, they have some prospects who might be able to bring that skill set to Boston down the road. Controversial curriculum swept up in Mass. literacy reform debate

An early literacy reform bill approved by the Massachusetts House of Representatives has intensified debate over whether some school districts and the creators of a controversial reading curriculum are seeking alternative routes to state approval. Science-of-reading advocates describe the activity as a “back-door effort,” while supporters of the curriculum reject that and say the program is being…

Patriots' win vs. Bengals exposed huge weakness that must be fixed

The New England Patriots came out of Paycor Stadium on Sunday with a 26-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals to extend their win streak to nine games and cement their place as the AFC’s No. 1 playoff seed entering Week 13. The victory came at a cost, though, as injuries to key players piled up, most notably left tackle Will Campbell and left guard Jared Wilson. This game also highlighted one of the…

Rain moves out quickly on busy travel day ahead of mostly sunny Thanksgiving

Rain scooted out quickly this morning on this busy travel day. We’re left with a lot of clouds, a smidge of sunshine, and very mild temperatures. Highs could reach to 60/61 with enough sun. Breezes will be light and travel across New England will be in fine shape. This passing storm system will intensify far to our north tomorrow, sending in colder air through the day. This still means sunshine, but winds will gradually increase by afternoon. Highs fall back to November standards, only rising to the upper 40s. We’re a bit colder on Black Friday with wind gusts topping 40 mph at times. This will send the wind chills back into the 20s and low 30s for the day. We’ll continue the sunny theme into the holiday weekend, with temperatures eventually recovering by Sunday. Next week is looking a bit trickier. We’re eying another small warmup before the real cold settles in by midweek. As the polar vortex settles over Hudson Bay, unseasonably cold air will move in for a few days. As long as this feature remains in place, we’ll be vulnerable to cold blasts into the middle of the month. Our focus will also shift to a small storm system developing on Tuesday night and moving offshore on Wednesday morning. We may be cold enough for accumulating snow in spots. Obviously, it’s a long way out, and much could change (A common line we’ll be using many times this winter). Travel safe and enjoy the holiday!
