Video shows woman backing away from suspect before she was found dead under Metrorail

Surveillance video shows the confrontation between a woman and a homeless man before she was found dead under a Miami Metrorail platform. Jorge Gomez, 45, was arrested Thursday on a second-degree murder charge in the death of 32-year-old Kanisa Love, an arrest report said. According to the report, on Nov. 15, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputies and fire rescue responded to the area of Southwest 80th Street and U.S. 1 for a report of an unconscious female. Jorge Gomez Once they arrived, they found the body of Love lying on the ground under the Dadeland South Metrorail station, the report said. The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner performed an autopsy and determined she died from blunt force trauma and classified her manner of death as homicide. Investigators determined that a day earlier, Gomez approached Love and without any provocation pushed her to the ground, the report said. The report said the incident was captured on surveillance footage. It didn’t give a possible motive for the killing or say whether Gomez and Love knew each other. The surveillance video also showed the moments before the attack, authorities said. Love is seen backing away from Gomez, who has his hands on his head and is following her. Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office flyer for Kanisa Love “He pushed the victim off the Metrorail platform resulting in her death,” a prosecutor said during Gomez’s appearance in bond court on Friday. Judge Mindy Glazer ordered Gomez held without bond. “He killed a 32-year-old lady standing on a Metrorail station, pushed her off,” Glazer said, shaking her head. “You see it all.” However, witnesses told NBC6 they saw Gomez push Love at a nearby shopping plaza. Investigators said the fall on her head ultimately killed her. Love is from Georgia and has no family in South Florida, said Marketta Humphrey, who went to high school with her. “We were so close that me and her cousin had a child together, and we became family,” Humphrey told NBC6. She described Love as the life of the party. “She spent the night at my house every day, full of life. She could get you out of sadness,” Humphrey said. “Her spirit was inviting and welcoming.” Love turned 32 on Nov. 7. A week later, she was found dead. “I’m going to really miss her. She’s everything, I’m not going to lie,” Humphrey said.

Man was allegedly 3x legal limit in fatal wrong-way DUI crash on Palmetto Expressway

A man has been arrested months after an alleged drunken wrong-way crash on the Palmetto Expressway in Miami-Dade left his passenger dead and another driver seriously injured, authorities said. Ricardo Oreste Rivas-Figueredo, 41, was arrested Thursday on charges including DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide in a reckless manner, DUI causing serious bodily injury, reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, and reckless driving with damage to property or person, an arrest report said. Ricardo Oreste Rivas-Figueredo The crash happened around 1 a.m. on July 14 in the southbound lanes of the Palmetto Expressway near Okeechobee Road. According to the report, Rivas-Figueredo was driving a white Mercedes SUV northbound in the southbound lanes when he collided head-on with a white Dodge SUV. The Mercedes began to roll and came to a final rest on its roof, and the front passenger in the Mercedes, a man named Marco Tulio Mejia Peralta, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene, the report said. The Dodge hit the concrete wall on the shoulder and also rolled over, leaving the driver, Alejandro Nieves Jr., hospitalized with serious injuries, including facial fractures, four broken ribs, and internal bleeding. Nieves had to have portions of his large and small intestines removed, his right arm was broken and required screws and plates, and he has “persistent pain and limited mobility months after the collision,” the report said. Rivas-Figueredo was also hospitalized, and blood samples taken from him revealed a .242 blood alcohol level, over three times Florida’s legal level of .08, the report said. Rivas-Figueredo was arrested at his northwest Miami-Dade home and booked into jail.

Man found guilty of kidnapping 6-year-old who fought him off in Miami

A man was found guilty Friday of kidnapping a 6-year-old girl who told police she was grabbed and slapped while playing outside her Miami apartment. Leonardo Venegas, 34, was also found guilty of child abuse after the jury deliberated for two hours. He was arrested in July 2023 and charged with kidnapping now 9-year-old Ah’Lyric. Prosecutors say he snatched the child and slapped her before fleeing the scene. Surveillance video shows Venegas allegedly roaming an apartment complex in northeast Miami-Dade around July 4 and July 6 of 2023. Prosecutors said that on July 4, Venegas waved at the child as she watched fireworks, trying to lure her toward him. After that failed attempt, they said he returned two days later in a more “aggressive” manner. According to an arrest report, the now 9-year-old Ah’Lyric was playing in her apartment courtyard with her siblings when they noticed a white Range Rover park nearby. The other children went inside, but the 6-year-old remained on the stairway. Moments later, the girl said a man, later identified as Venegas, grabbed her arm and began pulling her. When she fought back, prosecutors said he picked her up and attempted to carry her away. She bit him on the arm, causing him to drop her. Venegas then slapped her and ran off, according to the report. “I bit him,” Ah’Lyric told NBC6 at the time, adding she learned the move from her mother. “Leonardo Venegas kidnapped Ah’Lyric, but unfortunately for the defendant, he chose the wrong little girl,” prosecutor Jared Lorenz said during closing arguments. Venegas, who became emotional while testifying in his own defense, denied all allegations and called the child a liar. His attorney, David Donet, acknowledged Venegas appears in the surveillance video but argued he was in the area viewing properties as a realtor. Donet also criticized Miami Police, saying investigators mishandled the case. “Had the little girl who was kidnapped been a white girl in Coral Gables or Bayshore Drive…there would have been a lot better police work done,” Donet said. Prosecutors dismissed that argument, saying Venegas deliberately targeted vulnerable children. “Leonardo Venegas,  who lives in Miami Shores in an apartment in front of the water with a brand-new Range Rover…doesn’t go somewhere around where he lives,” said Alejandra De La Fuente, Assistant State Attorney. “Instead, on July 4 and July 6, he picks low-income neighborhoods where there are little kids unsupervised to prey on.” Venegas faces up to life in prison if convicted.

Surveillance shows masked burglars breaking into home of man behind ‘Sell to Bobby'

The real estate mogul behind “Sell to Bobby” shared the scary experience of his Miami-Dade home getting broken into while he and his family were sleeping inside. Surveillance cameras captured two masked and hooded people breaking into Bobby Suarez’s home at around 3 a.m. on Friday. “They literally were in my house for 28 minutes,” Suarez said. He said the burglars were bold, casually strolling around his house. One of them was even wearing flip-flops. The video shows them grabbing some items off the dining room table. They even stole his Porsche. However, Suarez said the scariest part is that the burglars entered his daughter’s room. “I feel violated, we’re unsafe, you know what I mean, my kids don’t want to sleep here anymore, my wife is traumatized,” he said. Suarez said his cars have been broken into before, but this is another level. “If they were willing to do that, would they be willing to kill us?” he said. Anyone who has information about this incident is asked to contact the police.
