Pascal Groß has officially closed the book on his Germany career, although the veteran midfielder revealed that the decision was actually made months ago.
The 35-year-old Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder confirmed that he had already retired from international football following the 2026 World Cup. Groß was part of Germany’s World Cup squad but was not selected by Jürgen Klopp for the new head coach’s first international squad.
Speaking to Sky, Groß explained that his decision was not connected to Klopp’s squad selection and that he simply had not publicly announced his retirement.
“For me, it was over after the World Cup. I wish the new generation all the best,” Groß said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Groß leaves the Germany setup after making 19 appearances for the national team and scoring once. His international career began relatively late, with his debut coming in September 2023 at the age of 32. He went on to represent Germany at Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup.
Interestingly, Groß announced his retirement immediately after another impressive performance for Brighton. He scored in a 3-0 victory over Arsenal and was named Man of the Match, providing a reminder that he still has plenty to offer at club level.
Now, though, his Germany chapter is finished. With Klopp beginning a new era and a younger generation moving into the spotlight, Groß appears perfectly content to step aside and let the next group take their opportunity.
