Miami man who fatally shot wife in front of their daughter sentenced to life in prison

A Miami man who fatally shot his wife in front of the couple’s teen daughter three years ago has been sentenced to life in prison.

Alberto Molinet, 73, was given the life sentence at a hearing Friday.

A jury convicted him in July of second-degree murder in the killing of wife Yulima Romero back on Sept. 10, 2023.

Police and prosecutors said the couple had been arguing when Molinet grabbed an unloaded gun and pulled the trigger while pointing it at Romero.

Romero hid inside a bathroom as Molinet loaded the gun and shot through the bathroom door then opened it and pistol-whipped her.

Molinet proceeded to bite her and fired a second gunshot at her, hitting her and causing her to fall to the ground.

The couple’s daughter, who was 13 at the time, witnessed the entire incident, and called 911 to report the shooting.

In Spanish, the daughter is heard telling her father in cellphone video, “You killed my mom. Look, if my mom dies, I will never forgive you.”

Prosecutors said Molinet was upset because Romero wanted to have a friend come visit and he was controlling and wasn’t having it.

They also said Molinet forced their daughter to take photos and video of Romero’s body.

At the sentencing hearing Friday, Romero’s attorneys asked for the minimum mandatory sentence of 25 years, claiming he had several medical issues including diabetes and kidney disease, among others.

But the judge said a life sentence was appropriate in the case.
