For the first time in 18 years, the Bundesliga has achieved something that seemed increasingly difficult in the DFB-Pokal: all 18 Bundesliga clubs have advanced to the second round.
The final piece of the puzzle came with Bayern Munich’s 4-1 victory over VfL Osnabrück, ensuring that every top-flight club survived the opening round.
That makes this a remarkable opening round for the Bundesliga. The DFB-Pokal is famous for producing giant killings, particularly when Bundesliga clubs travel to face lower-division opposition, but this time the top flight avoided a single major casualty.
It is also a sign of just how competitive the first round can be. With 64 teams entering the competition and Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga clubs facing opponents from across the German football pyramid, there is always the potential for an upset.
Now, all 18 Bundesliga clubs will wait to discover their next opponents.
The second-round draw takes place Saturday, September 5, at 17:45 CEST (11:45 AM EDT) at the German Football Museum in Dortmund. The matches will be played October 27th and 28th.
