In the first round of the DFB Pokal, Vincent Kompany decided that he would take no chances. Bayern Munich rested only Manuel Neuer and Dayot Upamecano, fielding an almost full-strength lineup against 2nd division side VfL Osnabrück. Therefore, a 4-1 win after 90 minutes seems like the most appropriate outcome.
The numbers highlight the level of dominance FC Bayern enjoyed in their first knockout game of the season.
Some things to note:
- 4 goals from 3.11 xG isn’t actually all that impressive, given that a large chunk of that comes from a penalty. Bayern Munich did not go all guns blazing, even if the lineup suggested otherwise.
- 9 shots on target from 22 total isn’t amazing. When you have Michael Olise feeding Harry Kane, you expect more.
- 48 touches inside the opposition box suggests an immense amount of offensive pressure, which likely happened because Osnabrück decided to park the bus after scoring their fortunate goal.
The game shows that this current edition of Bayern Munich is still a work in progress, and Vincent Kompany needs more time to get his squad online after the extended break caused by the World Cup. Still, it seems the players are on the right track, and new signings like Nathaniel Brown and Ismael Saibari are proving competent additions to the squad rotation.
